Of Conundrums, Pockets of Time, and Water to Down Our Bread…

I once had a client who said, “We [humans] consist of but pockets of time. Spend time on things that don’t matter-waste time–and you throw away yourself.”

As with life and pockets of time, humans also consist of a conglomeration of relationships, none so important as the one we hold with ourselves.

Despite all, we recognize and best come to know ourselves, who we are, our likes and dislikes, pet peeves and joys through interaction with others.

We can never truly come to understand some aspects of ourselves except by way of interaction with those outside ourselves.

Of Mars in Cancer, Courts of Change, and Travels…

Every story is like a court case wherein we, the author, like an attorney, tries a case of our protagonist.

Who is on trial?

Is your protagonist the defendant or the plaintiff seeking judgment and damages for a wrong committed upon her or him?

If she or his had been wronged then what was the crime and the injury inflicted?

Who committed the injustice?

What cries out for change?

Is this injustice still occurring at the outset of the novel?

If so what does the central character need to accomplish to stop the wrongful act?

The story we craft becomes our protagonist’s quest, their journey to achieve justice and survival, a tale of change and transformation.

The Genuine, Truth and Liberation..

There is something in every one of you that waits and listens for the sound of the genuine in yourself. It is the only true guide you will ever have. And if you cannot hear it, you will all of your life spend your days on the ends of strings that somebody else pulls.–
Howard Thurman, African American mystic
So much of what we do as writers extends from, if not flows out of the voice of our genuine and authentic self. The genuine of which Thurman speaks holds both the key to what we write, and our ability and commitment to writing the words of our hearts as delivered to us through the various dimensions of life that channel into and through us.
At a time when so much about and within our society seeks to silence the genuine, what is honest, unfettered and pure, writers of today stand upon the threshold of a new day. It is a dawning, not unlike times and past eras where old paradigms shifted and some fell in the wake of new ones arising.
