Motion, Identification and The Inertial Frame of Reference…

“Everything moves. Everything …motion is just a manifestation of going from one spot to another spot in space. When we are trying to understand motion all of the things that we measure from have to come from an inertial frame of reference. An inertial frame of reference is a reference frame that is moving at a constant speed and not changing direction.”

–Motion and Relativity, Dr. Charles Liu, Research Associate @ the Department of Astrophysics, American Museum of Natural History

The backbone of a story, particularly an entertaining and engaging one is motion, movement from one place in conscious and consensual reality to another.

Amplifying the reader’s engagement with the internal movement of the story, the emotional thread requires clarification of setting and displaying the subtle shifts that take place and occur in perception of setting reflective of one’s internal changes.

These changes are usually transmitted, or rather shown through the eyes and physical senses of the protagonist who is also the point-of-view character.

Adobe’s Design CS4, Intoxication and Zen in the Art of Writing…

“You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you…writing allows just the right recipes of truth, life, reality as you are able to eat, drink, and digest without hyperventilating and flopping like a dead fish in your bed.”

–Ray Bradbury, Zen in the Art of Writing

On reading this last night I considered how long it’s taking me to get my novel together, The House, that is. In actuality, the novel is written, and edited. I’m presently working on the layout of the text. I’m a do-it-your-selfer. After purchasing an edition of Adobe’s Design CS4 I feel obligated to at least make an attempt at transferring my novel that I am self-publishing from MS Word to book format.

Of Cognition, Revision, and the Internet…

“The emerging model of cognition is as a sustained act of imagination, and therefore continuously active participation in the consensual hallucination of reality.”

–Kris Saknussemm ( Write what you know–and be sorry) The Writer Magazine May 2010, author of the novels, Private Midnight and Zanesville

What if everything we experience in life is truly the occurrence of a dream, that our living is in essence, one small part of larger reality, the life and time of someone outside of us, or a person whose life surrounds, encompasses and holds that of ours?

What if the decisions we make, the actions we carry out are predetermined by those, past and present of this person?

What if we are but an aspect or one dimension of the terrain of the personality held by another?

What if the joy we experience in our dream is the nightmare some else is experiencing?

When does our madness become or stir another person’s joy?

African Bushmen, God, and Reality in Writing…

There is a Dream dreaming us.

–African Bushman

(The Mystic Vision–Daily Encounters with the Divine, Compiled by Andrew Harvey and Anne Baring)
How often do I create characters, work with them in uncovering their stories and personalities as I put write them on the page only to then meet a person who within seconds I recognize as one of my characters in a novel?

Very.

Of course these people have most often been around since long before I wrote or even conceived of the story to my novel, and its characters. I have not breathed them into life. And yet a connection exists between what we write and the life around us.

Let’s say for instance that the people I meet who remind me of characters I have created or who have emerged in my stories, have risen in some sense, from my novels.

What would that mean, that we as writers create characters whom we will then encounter in the physical form of human individuals through engagements and interactions and life?

And let’s say these people do not know, have no understanding or awareness that we are their creator.
